Thank you to the committee and the exhibitors for the invitation to judge Males at the 25th Anniversary show. I was very grateful to my stewards who kept having to remind me to sanitise my hands and still managed to keep the ring running smoothly! Currently we have some very nice dogs, but unfortunately not just in this entry but in general, the breed needs more quality in depth in our males. The main area that needs watching in my opinion is the general “bulk” we need to remember this is a medium sized unexaggerated breed. Many of the dogs are too solid to be truly functional in a working situation. The breed standard describes a functional gundog and we need to translate our interpretation of that into a very functional “agile” dog. Heads today tended not to have the harsh expressions of a few years ago and whilst some were too strong for my interpretation of the standard many still had soft kindly look that is so typical. Front construction was once described to me by a very knowledgeable breeder in the following way “get the front right and you have a third of the dog right”. In saying this they meant the neck would fit into the shoulder which in turn meant the head was carried in front of the neck not above the shoulder, the legs were under the dog and the topline followed through in a nice strong line. If the front assembly is forward placed and lacks angulation or the rib cage is too short it makes the above impossible. I found many failed in this area.
Minor Puppy Dog (8,4a)
1st Key’s Keydella Krazy Times, a very promising baby, kind head, clean neck set on to well placed shoulders, nicely sprung ribs of decent length, well balanced with correct length of leg, making a lovely overall shape when viewed in profile, tail needs to coat up, moved well and seemed to have a nice fun personality.
2nd Evans’ Chyanhal Pentewan another nicely balanced youngster with a look of quality very good coat and nicely shaped tail although set on could be better.
3rd King’s Linthwaite Zacharius
Puppy Dog (6,2a)
1st McLellan’s Saranden Shadeuxplay, kind head with soft expression. Good leg length of leg. Short coupled youngster, a very together puppy on the move.
2nd King’s Linthwaite Theodore well gown youngster with a nicely balanced head with a gentle expression, strong body from good ribs and coupling giving a good topline, feet could be tighter.
3rd Braddon’s Trendlewood Superstition
Junior Dog (11, 4a)
1st Kent’s Trewinnard the Tailor Handy medium sized yellow, head is broad enough for a youngster, lovely eye shape giving a correct gentle expression, clean through neck and shoulders, good body and ribs with strong loin.
2nd Woodley’s Alkhamhurst Moment of Truth black youngster head (correctly) needs time to break nice amount of leg bone leading into correct tight feet, good body properties front assembly slightly forward placed. Good strong hindquarters. Good coat, well clothed tail.
3rd Ellis & Mantulla’s Dolwen Stargazer
Yearling Dog (2)
1st Mills’ Lembas Maui black, masculine young male, good length of muzzle, well boned with deep body, level topline, well made throughout, well shaped tail. Moved well.
2nd Hill’s Kimbajak Full Golden Monty of Waggador yellow would prefer more front angulation, good ribs and couplings moved with enthusiasm
Maiden Dog (4)
1st Phillips’ Bowsian Dancing Brave at Sheenaron upstanding youngster, nice amount of leg length to body depth showed and moved with a good length of stride.
2nd Logan’s Madgack Monarda Minocqua front assembly forward placed, sensible amount of bone and enough rear angulation, coat of good depth and texture.

3rd Tipson’s Ffurador First Past the Post
Undergraduate Dog (1)
1st Carpanini’s Carpenny Kipling stood alone but held his place in my head as one who could be in the reckoning at the end. He has many qualities and will only keep improving. Good legs and feet and his pasterns have the right amount of give for a working dog. Totally unexaggerated. Very balanced on the move. One for the future. Made the final cut.
Graduate Dog (8,5a)
1st Chapman’s Daisypatch Jelly Tot JW CC medium sized yellow who was shown in lovely condition, he is strongly built over a compact’ish frame, head is strong and masculine, good length of neck into well laid shoulder with correct forechest nicely ribbed and with correct hind angulation, well boned moved straight and true with drive from the rear which was a deciding factor when it came to the final decision. Never put a foot wrong.
2nd Rawlinson& Balshaw’s Shanorrell Black Sabbath at Halshimoor lovely type out of coat on the day which made him look lighter in bone, well made and another one for the future he really took my eye.
3rd Quick and James’ Farnfield Crown Jewels
Post Graduate Dog (8,4a)
1st Edwards’ Kimbajak Precious Metal JW well bodied and balanced well made with good angulation at both ends, nicely made, I liked the way he used his well set-on tail which was carried level with his topline on the move
2nd Perkins’ Carromer Tegulia by Keeninspires strongly made and substantial yellow, well off for bone, very good in second thigh, tail carried high on the move.
3rd Jenner’s Lyjansen Simba’s Savanna
Mid Limit Dog (4)
1st Rawlinson & Balshaw’s Halshimoor Pitch Battle at Shanorrell JW Res CC a lovely yellow who won class on his front angulation which gives him the correct forechest. He carried no extra weight and what you see is all dog. Well made throughout giving him a very balanced look in profile.
2nd Hodge’s Naiken Elite Envoy (AI) JW IR JUN CH Chocolate with a good length of leg moved well coming and going, I would prefer more front angulation, shown in very good coat and handled so well as always
3rd Kennett’s Magnavalleys Cornishman
Limit Dog (10,3a)
1st Dodd Carriegame Moonshine quality black who is coming to his best nicely balanced, clean neck, good length of upper decent shoulder angulation which is mirrored in his hind angualtion
2nd McLellan’s Saranden Pensacola Chocolate kind head, decent length of leg, enough angulation at both ends, strong level topline perhaps helped by being shorter in rib than my ideal,
3rd Hext’s Deerbrook Maximus
Open dog (6)
1st Logan’s SH CH Madgack Mulberry Minocqua lovely type of Black who is fully mature and well made all through. I wrestled with myself in the class but despite the extra weight he was carrying awarded him 1st place as I preferred his overall construction to those placed further down the line. However, unfortunately when it came to considering class winners for the CC the extra weight counted against him and meant he looked too deep.
2nd Hodge’s Naiken East Meets West (AI) JW black who was in tip top condition well up to size and good legs, pasterns and feet, well sprung and shaped ribs into strong loin, for me his front angulation is just too steep,
3rd Richmond’s Brigglebank Birdman
Veteran Dog (7,3a)
1st Chapman’s Killanow Sentinel at Daisypatch what a lovely dog this is very surprised he didn’t make a title. He was in lovely condition and showed so well. Good front and rear.
2nd Bambrook’s Linjor Sessile Oak at Ravoakar ShCM similar to the winner in so many ways. Short rear pasterns.
3rd Farrar’s Henissy All That Jazz JW
