Cotswold and Wyevern Labrador Retriever Club. July 3rd 2024. Judges report on Bitches.
As a Cotswold and Wyevern Labrador Club member since it was first registered in 1988, this has to be one of my happiest judging appointments; awarding Labrador CCs for the 20th time, at my local breed club Championship show in the green carpeted Avon Hall at Malvern, with such fond memories of the clubs formation, times past and friends, family and mentors sadly no longer with us.
A little bit of history. Few of the present-day Cotswold and Wyevern Lab Club committee may know that, in the 1980s when registrations were rocketing and championship show entries, bar Crufts, often topped 16,000 per two or three day show, applications for additional breed clubs were normally turned down by the KC.
Luckily Gwen Broadley (Sandylands) and my Dad, the late Jack Booth (Bowstones) sat on the same Kennel Club committee in London every month and with well-prepared argument, together they were able to present the case to fellow KC committee members of the real need for an additional Labrador Retriever club situated in the south Midlands.
The application was eventually approved and Cotswold and Wyevern Labrador Retriever Club was KC registered in 1988. I still recall one sunny morning being driven from Birmingham, at breakneck speed, flat out down the M5 by Arthur Kelley, (Bradking) with his wife Peggy and a young enthusiastic David Craig in the back of the car to the first general meeting of the club at the Drum and Monkey pub in Worcestershire.
Thus, thirty six years later, I was really pleased that my 20th time of awarding Labrador CCs brought back these memories. What a thoroughly enjoyable day I spent, with 167 happy, healthy bitches to go over out of a total entry of 258 dogs and bitches, 318 class entries, whilst well-respected judge, David Shields went over the 91 males; I gather we had the top entry so far of 2024 bar Crufts, which is excellent for this ever popular, friendly club.
My thanks to all the committee members for a lovely day, especially Secretary Ed Casey, Erica Jayes in charge of cuisine and Karl Gawthorpe who stewarded for me perfectly. Good to see founder committee members Tony and Chris Jury sitting ringside all day and Lynn Minchella still serving on the committee and showing successfully. My thanks of course go to all the exhibitors attending this midweek show.
On to the present day comments. The quality of classic Labrador bitches is pleasing at the moment, with the “traditional” type still holding their own against the more “modern, everything bigger is better” type. These latter can be initially eye-catching at a distance, but going over I found them much heftier overall, with greater bone, bigger feet, greater ribs, greater weight, huge coats and enormous exaggerated second thighs. Few of this type were in hard muscular condition. I wonder where this fashion will end. Please don’t lets lose the classic Labrador.
I mostly excused coats, which, tended to be on the blow. Temperaments were excellent. Sound movement was good in the super-sized green carpeted ring. Overall construction and balance is good, Front and rear angulation is much better than former years, otter tails abounded. Eye colour was good in the majority; black eyes kill the melting expression. Correct tight feet were in the majority. Most toplines were level, ie not sloping forward or backwards but horizontal and certainly not sagging in the middle when standing or on the move.
